The idea of music therapy actually has its roots in ancient times, but it really only started to get serious attention after World War I and World War II. During these times, community musicians visited Veterans hospitals, and they played music for veterans who were suffering physical and emotional trauma brought on by the wars. The patients at these hospitals showed significant improvements after the music performances. Consequently, the doctors and nurses requested that musicians be hired to come to the hospitals.

In due course, it was decided that musicians assisting in hospitals needed specialized training. In 1944, Michigan State University began offering a music therapy degree program, the first of its kind in the world. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) was founded later, in 1988.

The positive effects of music therapy have been so well recognized that many insurance companies cover it as a form of medical treatment. Both Medicare and Medicaid cover it, also, provided that it is prescribed by a physician and the patient shows improvement from the music therapy.

Many people erroneously believe that clients of music therapy need to have musical abilities in order to benefit from music therapy. This belief is not true. Also, some believe that only one type of music can be beneficial for use in music therapy. This belief is also untrue. In actual fact, any type of music can be helpful in helping a client. The type of music used depends on the client’s preferences, as well as on the individual circumstances and the purpose of treatment. Also, the client’s overall goals from the therapy help determine the type of music to be used in the music therapy.

People who are already emotionally and physically healthy are now using music therapy to help reduce stress. Drumming, alone or with others, and listening to music mindfully can help make possible relaxation. In addition, music can be used to help stimulate physical exercise, as many people are capable of working out longer and harder when the workout routine is accompanied by music.

In spite of it’s long history, and roots in the suffering of wartime, music therapy today is an established form of treatment for helping people of all ages and genders.

Article by Stephen White

Music therapy assists in overcoming issues that are emotional, physical, social, and cognitive. This amazing type of theraoy also manages stress, promotes overall wellness, helps in the expression of feelings, to reduces or eliminate pain, to improves memory, promotes rehabilitation from physical problems or disorders, and to betters communication.

1. Who Can Do Music Therapy?

Music therapy is done through a music therapist. A music therapist first makes an assessment of the clients overall emotional and physical well-being. The music therapist also takes a look at the clients level of social functioning, cognitive skills, and communication abilities. After making these assessments, the musical therapist designs individual music sessions for the client. Sessions can, Of course, also include group music therapy. Music therapy options include listening to music, writing songs, discussing lyrics, performing music, and learning through music.

2. The Supporting Research

In integrated approach to music therapy has been shown to help children and adults of all ages. Music therapy helps those with developmental disabilities and learning disabilities overcome their learning obstacles. It also helps individuals with Alzheimers disease and other age-related conditions regain their memory. In addition, those who have coped with drug abuse or who have suffered from brain injuries can benefit from music therapy. People dealing with chronic or acute pain, including mothers giving birth, can also use music therapy to alleviate pain.

3. Hospitals Use Music Therapy

Music therapy is also sometimes used by hospitals to improve the mood of their patients or to counteract depression. They also use music to help encourage patients to move during physical therapy, or to calm patients that need to be sedated or who need to rest. Music therapy is also used in hospitals to decrease muscle tension and to help patients relax.

4. Schools Use Music Therapy

Schools even use music therapy to help children be more successful. For special education students, music therapy is sometimes included in the students Individualized Education Plan, or IEP. Music therapy is sometimes used to help these children improve their communication skills or to strengthen their physical coordination, that helps them be more successful in general education classes.

5. Music Soothes The Savage Beast

In fact, the concept of music therapy has its roots in ancient times, but really gained attention after World War I and World War II. At these times, community musicians visited Veterans hospitals and played for veterans who were suffering from physical and emotional trauma brought on by the wars. The patients at these hospitals showed notable improvement from the music. As a result, the doctors and nurses requested that musicians be hired to come to the hospitals.

6. The Benefits Of Music Therapy

The positive effects of music therapy have been so well recognized that many insurance companies cover it as a form of medical treatment. Medicare and Medicaid cover it, as well, so long as it is prescribed by a physician and the patient shows improvement from the music therapy.

7. No Musical Inclination Required

You don’t need to be musically talented to benefit from this therapy! Some people believe that only one type of music can be beneficial for use in music therapy. This is also untrue. In fact, all types of music can be helpful in helping a client. The type of music used depends on the clients preferences, as well as on the individual circumstances and the purpose of treatment. Also, the clients overall goals from the therapy help determine the type of music to be used in the music therapy.

8. Reduce Stress

The reduction of stress in emotionally healthy people can also be a benefit! Drumming and listening to music can help facilitate relaxation. Music can also stimulate physical excercise when doing a routine.

Vibrational sound proved to be an invaluable discovery when I used my body as a testing ground to completely cure treatment-resistant rapid cycling bipolar disorder. And, I am pleased to report that vibrational sound therapy has also been instrumental in assisting my clients who suffer from mania, depression and the anxiety that these conditions often bring.

I am well aware of what sounding can achieve. And yet, because my understanding of sound healing is a result of experience rather than cognitive knowing, I find this type of vibrational therapy difficult to explain. Despite this shortcoming, I will do my best to convey what I have gleaned from one tidbit of basic science and that which I have witnessed as a vibrational sound practitioner.

Science courses I suffered in years gone by taught me that there are elementary particles in atoms (that make up the molecules that make up all that exists) and that these particles carry charges that emit energy which vibrates at particular frequencies. I believe that these frequencies are affected by vibrational sound. Our physical bodies which are comprised of these energy filled atoms are interconnected to the emotional, mental and Spiritual bodies. Hence, I contend that when we state particular intentions for healing imbalances and we add sound frequencies, change manifests throughout all of the bodies because of the impact that sound has on the atomic structure of our beings.

Energetic imbalances such as bipolar disorder can be caused by a combination of genetic predisposition, trauma, repressed emotions, core belief systems, imbalanced brain chemistry, physical disease and other culprits. My own healing process taught me that when a brain disorder occurs, the faulty electrical circuitry that adversely affects brain chemistry can be realigned with vibrational sound.

The way this works is that the vibrational frequencies (which are of a Light-high vibration) go into the areas in crisis (which are of a dark-low vibration) and they heal the imbalanced spots within the brain chemistry with the higher vibration. It’s like switching on a light in a dark room whereupon the dark is no longer able to “survive.”

The reason I suggest that Light has the ability to transmute the density (or dark) is best explained by what the 17th Century Dutch scientist, Christian Huygens, discovered and called “entrainment.” The principle of entrainment basically states that less powerful vibrations from one source will align with more powerful vibrations from another (Leonard, 2006). According to George Leonard (2006), this occurs because “nature seeks the most efficient energy state and it takes less energy to pulse in cooperation than in opposition” (p. 23). So, if we consider the Light vibrations to be “the most efficient energy state,” and we believe that any thing less powerful than Light energy will ultimately move into “cooperation” with or align with the Light, we can more easily understand how Light can transmute the dark or more specifically—how sound vibrations can heal the biochemical imbalance that is known as bipolar disorder.

Perhaps it is easier to comprehend the ways in which sound affects us when we look at some everyday examples such as lullabies, movie soundtracks or any music that soothes, enlivens, incites or reminds us of someone or some other time. Certain musical instruments create sounds that change our moods and even move us to cry or smile or dance. These are all results of sound vibrations impacting our energetic systems.

The vibrational sounds that I facilitate during my healings sessions are at best, bizarre . . . well, beyond bizarre. You see, I never choose the sounds. I’m simply a conduit. It feels like I merely stand by and watch while the sound vibrations come through me in a vast array of qualities and tones. Many are indigenous sounding. Some sound like whales and dolphins. Others resemble what seem to be ancient Tibetan or Chinese languages. Often when I “sing” energies that feel to be ethereal high-frequency beings seem to thank me for my vocal chords as their sounds come through. At times I hear myself emit what could best be described as intergalactic communications in a low-budget science fiction film. When this occurs the frequencies are so high and so fast that my mouth nearly fails to move at the speed that these sounds require. (Astounding really, for I am the quintessential fast talkin’ New Yorker.)

Years ago, I was beginning a phone session with a new client who upon hearing the initial sounds, inquired incredulously, “Did those noises come out of you?” I had to laugh. She did too, but she didn’t hang up. In my opinion, the sounds are primordial language that people recognize on a soul level. I am impressed with those who do not consciously understand this, but still manage to trust in the healing properties of sound; those who refrain from “hanging up” despite the odd quality of the “songs.” If you are struggling with bipolar disorder, perhaps you will find a way to trust in this type of experience and receive the biochemical healing that vibrational sound therapy can bring

Article by Nicole Roberts

Sound therapy with tuning forks is a simple but powerful healing modality. Sound has a long history of use in the healing arts going back thousands of years. Modern science is now catching up to show the scientific basis for why sound works on the physical body. A variety of tuning fork systems are available based on different sound frequencies that have specific targets. Some sound therapy tuning forks have weights on the end so they can be applied to the physical body and the vibration felt by the client. These tuning forks work on the principles used by acupuncture which applies needles to various energy points on the body. These tuning forks work on the same principle, except that the weight of the tuning fork is applied to a specific site rather than inserting a needle. Other tuning forks are meant to be heard and work on the energy field. Becoming a sound therapy practitioner with SomaEnergetics™ tuning forks can be a rewarding and profitable experience. Here are some of the benefits:

UNIQUE – There may be dozens of massage therapists or reiki practitioners in your neighborhood but relatively few people working with sound healing therapy. You have the opportunity to offer something new and exciting to your clients without comparison to other modalities.

PROFITABLE – If you are new to the healing arts, you have the opportunity to create your own price schedule without direct comparison to other practitioners. If you work with an existing modality you can add elements of sound healing to your existing sessions and charge higher fees. Your current clients might be interested in returning more frequently for a sound healing therapy session and you will be able to attract new clients. Those who choose to become teachers will be able to purchase equipment at a discount and earn income by teaching other practitioners.

FLEXIBLE – It is very easy to incorporate the various techniques into your existing practice and combine them in different ways to continually offer your clients something new. Do the Energy Vitality Technique as part of your massage practice. If you are a reiki practitioner, you can get the chakras balanced and energy flowing in the body and then bring in the healing reiki energy with your hands. Massage Therapists have commented that they don’t have to work as hard to achieve the same results. We have combined the tuning forks with reiki, aromatherapy and the Bach Flower Remedies. Or use the 1 or 10 minute techniques before using another modality.

PORTABLE – The tuning are light weight and easy to carry. They don’t require electricity or special equipment. Some techniques can be done with the client sitting in a chair.

PROFESSIONAL – You can become a practitioner by either attending a workshop or completing the home study course. For those who want to become certified, there are options to obtaining a certification of study from a recognized licensing board.

AFFORDABLE – Depending on the options selected, you can start practicing with an investment in a 12 hour training class or home study course and purchase of the sound therapy tuning forks and receive a discount if you purchase both at the same time. Depending on your fee structure, you’ll recover your investment after only 8 to 10 client sessions. It is easy to start with one set of tuning forks and add different forks and techniques so you always have something new to offer your clients.

Article by Michael Davis

Sleep music and white noise sound machines are used for sound masking, as per when having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, due to external sounds. There are a lot manufacturers on the market, with everything from cheapola white noise machines to fairly expensive machines which deliver quality sound, ensuring a restful good nights sleep for even the most light sleeper.

White noise machines are also very helpful to people who contend with sleep disorders such as insomnia or restlessness. The many sounds which a quality machine can discharge can definitely be helpful in inducing sleep, as well as obstructing nighttime noises that can bother sleep. Another person who would prefer these machines are those who have to sleep with one who snores. Despite many wonderful products on the market today to alleviate snoring, it still occurs regularly with many people. A quality sound machine can mask such bothersome snoring sounds.

Another likely use for a sound machine is in an open concept office, where even low volume talking from co-workers several yards away can be annoying to your concentration.

So, here are the top selling, and most highest rated sleep music and white noise sound machines on Amazon today.

1. Ecotones Duet Adaptive Therapy Sleep Sound MachineThe Ecotones unit is very well designed. It provides attractive sound with a separate woofer and tweeter mounted on top..The sounds provided are of admirable quality. Unlike lesser quality units, which commonly use a recording that keeps repeating and soon proves bothersome, these recordings, which Ecotones calls sound stories, go on for thirty minutes before repeating. It is for all practical purposes impossible to determine when sound story finishes and then starts up again. There are several different sounds to choose from including something called city… so a city dweller who is away from home can feel right at home! However, the ever popular meadow, brook, the crackling fireplace, waterfall, ocean, are all extremely soothing. For something different, try the train, or meditation. There also is a plain vanilla white noise setting, if you wish. The response feature, whereupon the microphone picks up ambient sounds like coughing and snoring and adjusts the volume accordingly, works extremely well.A unique feature to Ecotones is the ‘richness’ setting. Adjusting this on your sound story will result in variations of your sleep music. A nice feature allowing you to modify your own personal sound stories.

2. Sound Oasis s3000 Sound Therapy SystemThis deluxe model features 20 main sounds & 5 mix sounds, which can create 120 sound environment possibilities. It boasts 3 speakers (including subwoofer), which results in wonderful sound quality. It also has an AM/FM stereo radio with 3 presets and a backlit, dual 12/24 hour clock with 3 alarm sounds complete with digital calendar. There’s a timer with 4 positions: continuous, 30 min., 60 min. and 90 min. with gentle-off, plus a nap timer. Most entertaining is the proprietary ‘Bio-Sync’ sound, a random hodgepodge of what sounds like musical notes, wind chimes, voices, and more. While it sounds strange, it is incredibly soothing. You can adjust the Bass and Treble. The sound of the speakers are rich and deep without being at max settings but if you turned it all the way up it would be really loudThe “memo” track is unique in the sound machines tested here – it lets you record up to 15 seconds and plays it over and over again. You can use this as an alarm too if you wish. The capabilities are endless as to what you can use that one feature for.

3. Marpac SleepMate 980AThis is the least expensive sound machine, but it is also a white noise machine only… no selection of sounds. There are advantages and disadvantages… the main advantage is, there is zero chance you will hear a sound looping! There are two rings on the unit which control the tone and to some degree the volume of the white noise:1. A Top Ring – You can adjust this ring to allow the anywhere from 3 to 8 holes to be exposed, thereby moving the sound level.2. A Base Ring – Allowing a larger opening into the unit when adjusting this ring will create a lower tone. Making the opening smaller will create a higher tone. Again, adjust the ring to your liking. One of the most effective things for a successful use of this machine is where you place it. Marpac recommends putting it away from you, such as on a dresser across the room. This seems to make the sound bounce around the room and give you a fuller feel of the sound. For some, this won’t generate a loud enough sound, so if you wish, you could put it on the nightstand right next to you and enjoy a blaring hissing sound.

4. Ecotones Adaptive Sound Therapy MachineThe grand daddy of all sleep therapy machines, this is THE most superior of all those we tried. This unit features twelve Sound Stories which include: Soothing Seaside, Calming Waves, Babbling Brook, Gentle Rain, Distant Thunderstorm, Nature’s Meadow, Crackling Fireplace, Warming Campfire, Relaxing Fan, Big City Background, Restful Train Ride and Pure Meditation. The unit’s speaker pair and a 2.4-liter sound chamber have been tuned to produce a full range of quality sound that is simply amazing. This unit, like it’s baby brother the Duet, features the adaptive sound technology that will step-up volumes to mask outside (interfering) noise. It works extremely well and is most useful if you live near a noisy street or even if you have a snorer in the room! But this machine also includes a manual mode (stays at user present level) and a background mode which comes on when the room is quiet and automatically dims when conversation is present. This is the “Cadillac” of sleep music sound machines!

5. Marsona TSC-330 White Noise Travel Sound ConditionerHere’s a small-ish sound machine that you can take on the road with you. Who hasn’t been in a hotel/motel room and been agitated by noisy guests next door? The Marsona TSC-330 White Noise Travel Sound Conditioner has rain, waterfall, and surf sounds. This machine is about the size of a thick paperback novel, so is definitely smaller than competitors “non-travel” sound machines. However, it does have a beefy AC adapter with the power brick on the end. It fits fine in a standard suitcase, but if you’re only taking a small overnight bag, then it does take up a bit more room than you’ll probably like. The unit does have a battery pack so you can leave the AC adapter at home, but it too is somewhat colossal. The sound is very good for such a small unit; base is surprisingly robust and the unit comes with it’s own travel pouch.

So there you have it, the best of the sleep music and white noise sound machines. See detailed specs and prices, along with other owners reviews, at my website.

Article by Franchis Adam

Light and sound therapies are “sensory” because they act on the human senses through waves of both sound and light. Sitting in the sun or listening to a favorite piece of music can definitely affect your mood. But because not all sound and light waves can be seen or heard, many therapists consider that they work on the energy or “vibrational” planes as well as at the psychological level.

Light Therapies

Insufficient natural light can lead to depression, tiredness, or overeating. In the winter, especially in colder countries, the level of indoor light produces only about a tenth of the illumination of a full day of natural light. A form of “winter blues” that can result from this is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It affects around 1 percent of the population (more women than men) but can be successfully treated with special “full spectrum” light units fitted into the home or into the office.

Color Therapy

Normal daylight (that is, light from the sun) is filtered through the eye to produce the visible colors of the spectrum red, yellow, orange, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Other colors invisible to the human eye are ultraviolet and infrared, which affect us even though we ‘can’t see them, because our skin is receptive to changes in light.

Color therapists work with colors to rebalance the body on both the physical and “psychic” levels. Therapists who work on the physical level believe that as light is received and absorbed through the skin it works on the nervous system to change the body’s chemical balance. By adjusting the amount of specific color input they believe they can affect physical well being as well as mood. Pink, for instance, is considered to have a calming effect, red speeds up the circulation and raises blood pressure, while blue lowers it.

On the psychic, or subtle energy level, therapists work to influence the seven energy centers, or chakras each of which is said to correspond to one of the seven colors of the light spectrum, starting with red for the “base” chakra and ending with violet at the “crown” center. So, for example, green is said to influence the “heart” chakra and yellow the “solar plexus.”

Colors and Aura

Many therapists work with your “aura” and “chakras”. An aura is an energy field, which, personal to each individual. Some therapists claim tob able to see an aura, which manifests itself in the fonno a shimmer or haze of colored light around the body. Every aura has its own colors, and they are affected by your health, well-being, and spirit. If your energy compromised in any way, that will be reflected in tit color of your aura.

Color therapists claim that every subtle change color affects us on every level of our being. Recent scientific studies have confirmed that every cell of our body is made up of contracted light – and because light responds to color, the as yet unproved theories behind color therapy are believed to make sense. Color therapy is aimed at restoring cells to an even level of balance, thus stimulating any necessary healing processes and improving overall spiritual and mental health. Your therapist will choose a color that he or she sees as vibrating at a frequency needed to restore the cells; he or she must take care to choose the correct color and offer it in the right “dosage” to ensure that the balance is maintained. Every color has both negative and positive attributes.

Stress, anxiety and depression have become big clinical and social problem which can affect anybody. Stress can hinder our ability to concentrate on our tasks and can have a very negative effect on our happiness. So, to stop this serious problem of stress, there are number of stress therapies which can help you in your fight against stress.

One of the most useful therapies which are gaining much popularity because of its effectiveness is sound therapy. This therapy not only helps you overcome stress, but can also make you sufficiently mentally strong to face the stress that you could get in future.

Sound therapy has brought a new revolution in the field of stress prevention and management. Sound therapy, works by you listening to some particular type of either classical or relaxation music everyday at certain times. Using this technique on a regular basis will help to reduce your stress everyday. Your ear becomes receptive to the high and low tones of the music, which stimulated your hearing organs. This sound is then passed to the nerve cells of the brain, which have a calming effect on our mind, and takes way the tiredness. Using this technique on a regular basis will help to reduce your stress everyday.

You can have the benefit of sound therapy at any place. It doesn’t matter whether you are at your home, your workplace or any other place. All you need is music player and the CD/ cassette of the sounds as prescribed under the therapy. This way you don’t have to waste any time to take special sessions. Also this therapy is very cheap and affordable when you compare it to other forms of stress relieving procedures.

You don’t have to consume harmful medications, and so you don’t have to worry about any side effects. All you have to listen to the tapes for around two hours per day. You would see the benefit of the sound therapy in fighting stress in matter of few months.

Sound therapy is also known to improve the creativity and concentration of people. You can think in a much clearer way and be more confident of your decisions. Sound therapy can also help people who have trouble sleeping, and it can help you to fall sleep easier every night. It can also fight many phobias like phobias of dark, height and people.

Sound therapy is especially useful for children who have a short attention span and can’t concentrate on their studies. It will help them to overcome many inherent problems like dyslexia and ADHD. So, if your child is not able to concentrate on simple tasks, now you know what to do.

But you should understand that sound therapy works when you listen to some certain kind of classical music, not just any music. If you listen to wrong type of music, it can even have negative effects on your mind. So if you want to seek sound therapy, you should go to an expert who can tell you the ways to fight your stress through sound therapy effectively.

Tinnitus Sound Therapy

There are a multitude of different theories when it comes to attention for Tinnitus. These can include resources such as Sound Therapy, Vitamins/Supplements, hypnosis and other self boost techniques and there are also masking techniques clearly to help cover up the Tinnitus portion effects. Tinnitus Sound Therapy

On the a good amount of hand, some make the assumption that you won’t especially cure Tinnitus but that you can alone ever treat it, the there are no permanent cures. From the examination I have done, it seems that anyone is a small bit diverse and that yes, a good deal of have to carry on to work at keeping their Tinnitus at bay, while others’ half effects go away completely.

There does not seem to be any rhyme or grounds to it, that is just how right now problem seems to work. At this time, I am prepared to paint how sound therapy works and why it is stated to be a nice resource in curing or treating your Tinnitus. In a nut shell, sound therapy is used to reprogram your brain to pay attention to different sounds and retrain your ears to different sounds. They try to stretch your range in registering sound and tuning out the constant ringing or whooshing, etc. that you might be hearing.

What you do is listen to a series of predetermined sounds in earphones or on a high quality stereo. These sounds can consist of clicks and pauses or can be more elaborate with different nature sounds or other scenarios. Regardless of which type you listen to, the frequencies in the sounds are what makes your ears and brain retrain to tune out your Tinnitus. These sounds can be created custom for your own scenario or you can get generic sound therapy treatment CD’s and experiment on which one gives you the most relief. Tinnitus Sound Therapy

Some people receive relief from their Tinnitus in as little as a couple of weeks and others can take more time, as long as 3-5 months. Regardless of how long it takes, you should continue to listen to the sounds every day or night to keep the Tinnitus at bay. A good time to do the sound therapy is when you are in bed. This way you aren’t distracted in other activities and your brain can really register what it is hearing.

Additionally, there has also been research in the idea of your brain learning subconsciously while you are sleeping. This has been proved with things such as learning another language, or studying for a test. Why wouldn’t it work for sound therapy? Like I stated earlier, sound therapy can be quite successful for a lot of people, however, it isn’t guaranteed. Tinnitus Sound Therapy

Tinnitus is so subjective in each person that it could require a completely different treatment. Regardless, if sound therapy does not work for you, don’t give up, try something different until you get the results you are looking for. Suffering from Ringing Ears and Tinnitus?
